Sizzix Big Shot Starter Kit
Quilters, meet your new best friend—the Sizzix Big Shot Starter Kit makes cutting quilt pieces easy!
Described as “The Ultimate Crafters tool” the Sizzix Big Shot Starter Kit is a cutting and embossing machine.
You can use it for cutting your quilt pieces and there are a range of die shapes to choose from as optional extras.
It also cuts paper and creates embossing effects. It works with most of the Sizzix products with the exception of Bigz Plus and Bigz Pro dies.
My primary interest is in the fabric cutting capabilities of the Sizzix but it can also be used for home decor, scrap-booking, and card making .

Advantages for Quilters
Quilters know that precision and efficiency are everything when it comes to creating beautiful designs.
The Sizzix Big Shot Starter Kit is a tool that transforms how you approach fabric preparation, taking the hassle out of cutting and letting you focus on your art.
Here’s how this machine supports quilters, whether you’re just starting out or you’ve been sewing for years.
Precision Cutting
Accuracy can make or break a quilt. Have you ever spent hours cutting pieces by hand only to realize they’re slightly off?
The Sizzix Big Shot solves this problem with its precise die-cutting system. Every piece you run through the machine comes out exactly the same as the one before it.
This kind of consistency isn’t just helpful—it’s essential.
When your fabric pieces are perfectly uniform, your quilt comes together seamlessly, with no gaps or mismatched edges.
Features like this are especially valuable when working with intricate patterns where even the smallest imperfection can throw off the design.
Variety of Materials
This is where your fabric stash comes into use!
Quilting often means working with more than just standard cotton. Whether you use felt, fleece, denim, or even lightweight canvas, the Sizzix Big Shot can handle it.
I’ve even seen people cut specialty materials like batting and stabilizers, which are tougher than your average fabric.
The machine’s versatility means you’re not limited by material type. It cuts through multiple layers of fabric at once, letting you create stackable pieces for bulk projects.
Time-Saving Benefits
Quilting is a labor of love, but let’s be honest—it can be slow.
That’s where the Sizzix Big Shot truly shines.
Instead of spending hours measuring and cutting fabric, you can prep your pieces in a fraction of the time.
For example, cutting squares, triangles, or other common shapes can feel endless with scissors or a rotary cutter.
With the pre-designed dies, you’ll have those pieces ready in minutes.
This isn’t just about convenience—it’s about giving yourself more time to focus on what you love most: sewing and designing.
Ease of Use
No one wants a complicated machine that takes hours to figure out. One of the biggest perks of the Sizzix Big Shot is how simple it is to use.
Even if you’ve never touched a die-cutting machine, you’ll find the process straightforward.
This manual machine operates with a smooth hand crank that requires minimal effort.
All you do is place your fabric and die between the cutting pads, sandwich them together, and roll it through the machine.
That’s it! For beginners, it’s a confidence booster. For seasoned quilters, it’s just plain convenient.
You’ll feel comfortable right out of the box.
Because there’s no electricity needed, you can set it up wherever you have space—whether that’s your sewing room or the kitchen table.
By simplifying the cutting process, the Sizzix Big Shot Starter Kit is not just a tool. It’s a partner in your creative projects.
With a Big Shot Machine you can have accurately cut squares and in a fraction of the time.
There’s a massive range of die shapes to choose from.
How does the Sizzix work?
The Sizzix is a hand operated roller machine which takes your fabric/paper/card through the machine cutting whatever shape you’ve chosen.
Setting Up the Machine
When you unpack the Sizzix Big Shot, the first thing you’ll notice is how solidly built it feels.
It’s a sturdy machine, which means it won’t slide around as you work.
Setting it up is simple, and you’ll be ready to start cutting in just a few steps:
- Find a Stable Surface: Place the Big Shot on a flat, stable table or countertop. Make sure there’s enough room to roll out your cutting pads from both sides.
- Unpack the Components: Inside the kit, locate the cutting pads, dies, and multipurpose platform. Lay them out so you know where everything is.
- Attach the Multipurpose Platform: Slide the platform into the base of the machine. This creates the foundation for your cutting “sandwich.”
- Layer Your Materials: Place your die (cutting side up) on the platform, then layer your fabric on top. Cover it with the cutting pad.
- Begin Cranking: Insert the sandwich into the machine and turn the hand crank. The rollers apply pressure, cutting your fabric as the sandwich moves through.
That’s it!
Once you’ve cranked the sandwich completely through, lift the top pad, and you’ll see perfectly cut fabric pieces.
It’s surprisingly satisfying and makes you want to cut everything in sight (don’t say I didn’t warn you).
Basic Techniques
If you’re new to die-cutting, don’t worry—it’s easier than you think. For basic cuts, especially with fabric, here are a few tips to keep your cuts clean and efficient:
- Prepare Your Fabric: Iron your fabric first, so it’s smooth and free of wrinkles. This ensures clean cuts.
- Layering Fabric: The Big Shot can cut through several layers at a time, but start simple with one or two layers until you’re comfortable.
- Align the Die: Place your fabric on the die, aligning it to cover the cutting shapes completely. This prevents wasted material.
Roll Slowly: Crank the handle at a steady pace. Don’t rush, as precision matters more than speed.
The video below from Sizzix shows Jess opening the box and taking you step by step as she uses the machine for the first time.

Project Ideas for Beginners
One of the best things about the Sizzix Big Shot Starter Kit is how beginner-friendly it is. If you’re unsure where to start, here are a few simple quilt projects to explore:
- Patchwork Coasters: Use your machine to cut uniform squares, then piece them together to create colorful coasters. This is a great way to practice sewing straight seams.
- Baby Quilt: Start small with a baby quilt made from basic squares or triangles. The dies in the starter kit are perfect for this, and you’ll gain confidence as you sew the pieces together.
- Fabric Bunting: Cut triangles from leftover fabric and sew them onto a ribbon to make decorative bunting. This project is quick and adds a handmade touch to any space.
- Mini Quilt Wall Hanging: Choose a couple of shapes, like hexagons or diamonds, and create a small wall hanging. This is great for testing out designs without the pressure of a full-sized quilt.
If these sound too simple, just remember: the goal is to get comfortable with the machine and enjoy the process. Once you feel confident, you’ll be ready to tackle larger, more complex projects in no time.

User Reviews and Testimonials
The Sizzix Big Shot Starter Kit has earned its spot in many quilting rooms because it’s a reliable fabric-cutting machine.
Whether it’s positive feedback or challenges to consider, hearing from fellow quilters can help you decide if this tool is right for you.
Positive Experiences
Quilters rave about the Sizzix Big Shot, and it’s easy to see why. Here are some of the standout user experiences that pop up time and time again:
- Precision That Saves Time: Many users love how accurately the machine cuts fabric. One quilter shared that they were able to cut over 50 quilt blocks in under an hour!
- Ease of Use: Beginners often mention how simple the machine is to operate. The instructions are clear, and the hand-crank design is straightforward, even for those trying a die-cutting machine for the first time.
- Consistent Results: Quilters who work on intricate patterns appreciate how every cut piece comes out exactly the same.
- Durable Build: Numerous users highlight how sturdy the machine feels. One reviewer said, “It’s built like a tank but operates so smoothly.” This confidence in the build quality ensures it will last for years of quilting projects.
- Supports Creativity: Feedback frequently credits the Big Shot with boosting creativity. With perfectly cut shapes, quilters feel free to experiment with designs they might have avoided before due to cutting challenges.
There’s also a lot of love for how it handles a variety of fabrics. From cotton to felt and even lightweight denim, users praise its versatility.
The ability to layer multiples of the same shape in one go? It’s a time-saver that many testimonials emphasize.
Common Challenges
Like any tool, the Sizzix Big Shot isn’t without its quirks.
Most challenges, however, come with actionable solutions based on user insights.
Here are the most common frustrations—and how to navigate them effectively:
- Learning Curve for Perfect Sandwiches: Some beginners struggle with creating the right “sandwich” of cutting pads, dies, and fabric. If layers aren’t aligned correctly, cuts may not go all the way through. The fix? Take your time to follow the instructions and ensure the die is placed cutting side up. Practicing on scrap fabric can also help.
- Limited Die Variety in the Starter Kit: A few users mention wishing the kit came with additional shapes. While the included dies are great for beginners, seasoned quilters might want more options. The good news? Sizzix offers a wide range of dies you can purchase later to expand your toolkit.
- Cutting Thick Fabrics: While the Big Shot handles many fabrics, some thicker materials—like batting or multiple heavy layers—may require extra effort. To address this, quilters recommend adjusting the layers to avoid overloading the machine. Running the material through the machine twice can also help ensure a clean cut.
- Maintenance of Cutting Pads: Cutting pads can start to show wear after heavy use. Some users worry about replacing them too often. However, flipping and rotating the pads regularly can extend their life. Over time, investing in replacement pads is worth it for maintaining accuracy.
Ultimately, these challenges are minor compared to the benefits the Sizzix Big Shot Starter Kit brings to quilting.
When you read user testimonials, the common theme is that this tool simplifies quilting in ways that make the occasional hiccup easy to overlook.

The solid construction and the versatility of the Sizzix machine will be perfect for getting accurately cut fabric pieces.
